what makes popcorn pop

My nephews often visit our house on weekends. When they come over, their parents usually go out on a date and leave my nephews with us for a few hours. We have so much fun with our nephews. We like to watch movies on DVD with popcorn. My sister often buys microwaveable popcorn and we eat them while watching cartoon movies. My eldest nephew Richard once asked my sister what makes popcorn pop. He was curious about everything.

It was very easy to explain to a five year old since he believed everything we said anyway. We told him that it’s the kernel that’s inside the popcorn. The kernel contains water and when it is heated like in the microwave, the kernel expands. The kernel then gets bigger and bigger until it suddenly pops in to what we see as popcorn. And this is what makes popcorn pop.
